Special Session Abstract

The increasing integration of distributed renewable generation, energy storage systems, and electrified loads is reshaping flexible distribution networks, creating challenges for voltage and frequency regulation, converter interactions, and disturbance recovery. Grid-forming control offers new opportunities to strengthen grid support, while its effective deployment requires coordination with grid-following resources, flexible loads, and network-level operational decisions. This session aims to explore advanced control and optimization strategies for flexible distribution networks and interconnected microgrids, with particular emphasis on multi-converter coordination, dynamic stability, and resilient operation under diverse operating conditions. Contributions addressing renewable generation, battery storage, electric vehicle charging, and other controllable resources are welcome. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, system modeling, stability analysis, coordinated voltage and frequency control, power sharing, power quality improvement, and operational optimization considering stability and energy constraints. The session also covers fault ride-through, current limiting, transitions between grid-connected and islanded operation, black start, and service restoration. By bringing together theoretical developments, experimental studies, and engineering applications, the session seeks to advance methods that improve renewable energy utilization, energy efficiency, and reliable electricity supply during normal operation, disturbances, and recovery.
